SVOD2009 Jury

The highlight of SVOD-2009 will be the presentation of the best private companies from Russia, Ukraine and other FSU contries. 20+ innovative projects will be pre-selected by the SVOD Expert Panel for presentations to the audience of US investors and potential corporate partners.

Companies presentations will be judged by our distinguished panel of Silicon Valley venture capitalists and angels.

   
Kari Andersen
Founder, Generation Origin

Generation Origin is a traditional early-stage IT venture capital fund that builds global companies in Silicon Valley by sourcing technologies from Chinese and Japanese entrepreneurs. Since starting in private equity in 1989, Kari has spearheaded innovative investment products and forged alliances between tech start-ups and Japanese corporations. As a Principal at Knightsbridge Advisors, she originated fund-raising for the sixth Knightsbridge early-stage U.S. venture capital fund of funds.

Prior to that, she gained early-stage operational experience overseeing a ten-fold increase in assets under management over five years as one of five members of an executive team at VenCap International, an Oxford-based private equity fund of fund and public technology manager. Kari began her career at Sumitomo Trust, Tokyo, where her passion for budding technology was kindled as she invested in U.S. venture funds and initiated a tech focus for the M&A team. She earned a B.A. from Kokusaikirisutokyo University in Japan and an MBA with honors from Solvay in Brussels. Raised in Asia, she speaks 5 languages, including Japanese.


Yan Breek
Angel investor

Serial entrepreneur and angel investor. Founded 4 start-up companies in the fields of software development, finance, and real estate services.

Invested in start-up companies in US, Russia, and South America. Invested in international real estate deals. International business development expert.

Graduated from Stanford Business School in 2004 MS degree in Physics from Moscow, Russia, 1988 Born in St Petersburg, Russia. Live in Silicon Valley since 1991.


Rudy Burger
Managing Partner, Woodside Capital Partners

Rudy is a leading expert in digital technologies and international business development. Over the past twenty-five years, he has founded companies in the US, run a European public company, and served as a senior executive for two global 500 companies - EVP and CTO for NEC Packard Bell and VP Software for Xerox. He is an effective, dynamic leader with a proven track record in strategic planning, change management, and business development.

Prior to Woodside Capital Partners, Rudy led the restructuring of Scipher plc which involved the sale of all of the company's operating businesses. Prior to Scipher, Rudy was the founding CEO of Media Lab Europe, a $40M joint venture between MIT and the Irish government.

Rudy has founded five companies, all in the digital media technologies sector. One of these companies, Visioneer, went public in 1995 on NASDAQ.

In addition to being a partner of Woodside Capital Partners, Dr. Burger serves on the boards of several US and overseas companies including Quester Capital Management and Motorola's Research Board. Rudy has a BSc and MSc from Yale University and a PhD from Cambridge University.


Albert Cha
Managing Partner, Vivo Ventures

Albert Cha, M.D., Ph.D. is a Managing Partner who invests in private and public biopharmaceutical and medical device companies. Albert draws on his scientific, medical, and operating experience when working with his portfolio companies.

He was an early investor in Aspreva Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ASPV), CoTherix (CTRX), Biodel (BIOD), and Bioform Medical (BFRM). Other investments include Acura Pharmaceuticals (ACUR), AMAG Pharmaceuticals (AMAG), APT Pharmaceuticals, Avanir Pharmaceuticals (AVNR), Discovery Labs (DSCO), Repros Therapeutics (RPRX), and Tria Beauty. He currently serves on the board of several private biopharmaceutical and medical device companies. Albert has also served as founding or interim CEO for several portfolio companies.

Prior to joining Vivo, Albert worked at Oracle Corporation in pharmaceutical consulting and at the Palo Alto VA Hospital as a biomedical engineer. Albert received his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He subsequently completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at UCLA School of Medicine, where he received his M.D. and Ph.D. in Neuroscience. During his studies, he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and won the prestigious Outstanding Graduate Student Award. His research in molecular biophysics has been published in highly respected journals such as Nature and Neuron.


 

Daniel Cohen
General Partner, Gemini Israel Funds

Daniel Cohen is a General Partner at Gemini Israel Funds, specializing in Consumer Internet, digital media and Software-as-a-Service investments. He joined the firm in August, 2001 and currently sits on the Board of Gemini companies SupportSpace, Adap.tv, Outbrain, Confidela, Verix, Massive Impact and Eyeview. Danny began his career as a SW developer and product manager in a few Israeli high-tech companies. In his last position he ran strategic marketing for Commtouch. Danny has a BA in computer science and psychology from Tel-Aviv University and an MBA from INSEAD.


 

Jeff Crowe
General Partner Norwest Venture Partners

Jeff joined Norwest Venture Partners in 2004 and focuses on investments in software, Internet, and consumer arenas. He currently serves on the boards of deCarta, Evincii, Jigsaw, Lending Club, Nano-Tex, Tuvox, and Turn. Jeff is actively involved with Cast Iron Systems.

Prior to Norwest, Jeff served as President, COO and board member of DoveBid, Inc., a privately held business auction firm.   From 1990 to 1999, Jeff was co-founder, President, CEO and Board member of Edify Corporation, a venture backed enterprise software company focused on voice and internet e-commerce platforms and applications. Edify held its IPO in 1996 and was sold to S1 Corporation in 1999.  Previously, Jeff worked at ROLM Corporation, IBM and Siemens in marketing and general management.

Tim Danford
Managing Director, Storm Ventures

Tim joined Storm Ventures from Cisco Systems, where he was a technology leader in the Business Development organization. Tim worked with senior executives to develop strategies for entering new markets and was responsible for developing technology strategy, identifying opportunities and working with business development managers to execute investment, partnering and acquisition transactions.
 
During Tim's 6-year tenure at Cisco, he played a key role in developing Cisco's wireless strategy. The implementation of this wireless strategy resulted in the acquisition of JetCell, where Tim was the primary technology interface, as well as the acquisition of Exio, where Tim worked closely with the founders as they were exiting Hyundai and developing their product.

Tim also worked closely with senior executives to develop and build Cisco's Enterprise VoIP (Voice-over-IP) Business Unit, which resulted in the acquisition of Selsius and the implementation of the Cisco AVVID product lines. Tim was awarded the first prestigious Technology Pioneer award by Cisco's CTO for his contributions to the founding VoIP team.

Prior to Tim's contributions to Cisco's VoIP technology he managed a team responsible for competitive analysis of ATM networking equipment, and he worked closely with the Lightspeed team after their acquisition. Tim supported Cisco's early sales efforts and customers as a Systems Engineer designing and building large router networks.

Tim has over 18 years of extensive Internetworking and Telecommunications experience gained while working at Cisco Systems, Synoptics and Ameritech Information Systems. His technical education is in ship-board radio and telecommunications systems from the U.S. Coast Guard and studied at the Advanced Data Networking Institute in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Tim studied Criminal Justice at Kent State University in Ohio. 


Somesh Dash Somesh Dash
Senior Analyst, Institutional Venture Partners

Somesh Dash joined IVP as a Senior Analyst in March of 2005. He focuses on expansion-stage investments in software and communications.

Prior to joining IVP, Mr. Dash was an Analyst in the Corporate Finance Division of CSFB's Technology Investment Banking Group. While at CSFB, Mr. Dash focused on strategic financing initiatives for a number of public and private technology companies. His responsibilities included analyzing and executing a variety of financings within the Semiconductor, Software, Internet, Communications, and IT Services verticals.

Prior to joining CSFB, Mr. Dash worked for Luxmi Capital, an early stage venture capital fund focused on digital media investments. He also worked for the Corporate Development Division of Sony Entertainment Television (SET) in Mumbai, India. His responsibilities included developing strategies for augmenting advertising revenues, and establishing partnerships with leading Indian technology and media companies.

Mr. Dash received a B.S. in Business Administration from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley.


Konstantin Demetriou
Managing Director, RUSNANO

Having graduated from Moscow State University and Cambirdge University, Mr. Demetriou worked as an investment advisor for the International Finance Corporation (division of the World Bank). Later he continued his studies in Cornell University in the US, graduating with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he worked for Lehman Brothers in London and New York in Investment Banking. From 2000 to 2006 Mr. Demetriou worked in London as a Principal Banker for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development managing projects with leading Russian and foreign companies, structuring and monitoring transactions in the real estate, petrochemical, oil and gas, telecommunications, infrastructure and mining industries. In 2006 Mr. Demetriou became Head of the Capital Markets and Investments for Russia and the CIS, and a board member of Jones Lang LaSalle Russia and CIS. Since 2008 he has been a Managing Director of Rusnano.

Educational background:
1994 - graduated prima cum laude majoring in Economics from Lomonosov Moscow State University.
1994 - completed Masters Program in International Relations in the University of Cambridge.
1998 - completed Master of Business Administration program of Cornell University.

 

David Feinleib
Partner, Mohr-Davidow Ventures

 

David Feinleib brings extensive entrepreneurial and operating experience to his role at MDV. He invests in Internet-enabled companies.

Prior to MDV, David ran a profitable online advertising business. He founded Likewise, a venture funded company providing interoperability software for mixed Windows and Linux environments. Before Likewise, David was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Ignition Partners, where he co-founded and was VP of Product Management at Consera Software (HPQ).
Prior to Consera, David co-founded and was CEO of onDevice (KEYN), a wireless software company.

Before onDevice, David led marketing and development teams at Microsoft.
He managed the Out of Box Experience team for Windows and worked on television and Internet access services. David's first entrepreneurial endeavor was in junior high school when he developed and sold ShareWare programs.

David maintains a blog at www.vcdave.com. He sourced MDV's investments in Fliqz, Genius, hi5, Infusion Software, Ironkey, and PBworks. He serves on the board of VirtuOz, and is a board observer at Visible Measures. He is also a director of Likewise .

David holds a B.A. from Cornell University, and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.


 

Matan Friedman
Senior Associate, Bessemer Venture Partners

 Matan Friedman is a Senior Associate in the California office. He joined BVP in 2008 to focus on the Cleantech sector.

Most recently, Matan held a role in Strategy and Business Development for Ze-Gen Inc., an early-stage Boston-based developer of advanced waste-to-energy technology.  While in Boston, Matan also engaged in consulting projects for early stage startups in the recycling and water purification sectors.  Previously, he was a Business Analyst with McKinsey and Co.’s Tel Aviv office, where he consulted on productivity improvement, business development, strategy and corporate finance. Earlier in his career, Matan held a series of roles in the Intelligence branch of the Israeli Defense Force, attaining the rank of Lieutenant.  It was during this time, as he worked on R&D related projects that his interest in energy and efficiency began.

Matan holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Tel Aviv University.
 


Skip Glass

Skip Glass
Operating Partner, Foundation Capital

Skip joined Foundation Capital in 2007, and works to assist the firm's portfolio companies and help in the assessment of potential new investments. He has more than 20 years of experience as an entrepreneur, investor, and advisor to dozens of successful software, networking, and security companies, including as CEO and President of URoam (acquired by F5), COO of Kiva (acquired by Netscape), VP of Field Operations at Illustra (acquired by Informix), VP of Marketing at Sybase, and trading area manager at IBM. He currently represents Foundation Capital on the board of SpringCM.

Prior to Foundation Capital, Skip worked with Canaan Partners, representing that firm on the boards of Voyence (acquired by EMC), Groundwork Open Solutions, and VUE Technology (acquired by Tyco). As an early stage investor, Skip has invested in several technology startups including Sygate (acquired by Symantec), SleepyCat Software (Acquired by Oracle), eHealth Insurance (IPO), and Retention Education (privately held).

Skip has also used his entrepreneurial expertise in the charitable world, having participated in the funding and management of a number of organizations. He is a recipient of the J. William Brownsfield award for outstanding civic contribution. Skip holds a BS from Sacramento State University and an MBA from University of Arizona. In his rare moments of downtime, he can be found cycling, hiking, and vacationing with his family.

Sumeet Jain
Senior Associate, CMEA Ventures

Sumeet is an investment professional in CMEA's Technology group. Prior to CMEA, Sumeet was with Goldman, Sachs & Co. in its Technology, Media & Telecom investment banking group. At Goldman Sachs, he focused on mergers and acquisitions as well as equity and debt financing transactions across the software, internet, semiconductor, and communications equipment sectors. Prior to Goldman Sachs, Sumeet worked in business development and sales at iManage, a content management software company until its acquisition by Interwoven in 2003.

Previously, Sumeet was with Personify, an early web analytics software company, and where he helped grow the company with roles in product management, business development, sales and professional services. Sumeet began his career with Andersen Consulting (Accenture) where he worked on operations for companies in Andersen Technology Ventures portfolio. Sumeet holds a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from Cornell University, and a MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.


Arif Janmohamed
Senior Associate, LightSpeed Venture Partners

Arif joined Lightspeed in 2008 and focuses primarily on investments in the areas of infrastructure, communications, networking, and software.

Prior to joining Lightspeed, Arif worked in the Corporate Business Development group at Cisco where he focused on opportunities in the unified communications and SaaS market. Before joining Cisco Systems, he was with Novitas Capital, an early-stage venture capital firm.

Earlier in his career, Arif worked in technical development and product management roles at WebTV (acquired by MSFT), Andes Networks (acquired by SUNW), and Sun Microsystems.

Arif holds an MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and a BSc in Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada.


Oleg Kaganovich Oleg Kaganovich
Partner ,DFJ Aurora

Oleg Kaganovich is a Partner with DFJ Aurora. Most recently, he was a Principal at DFJ Frontier, where he is now a Venture Partner. Previously, he was CEO of the Sacramento Regional Technology Alliance (SARTA), where he helped startup entrepreneurs advance their businesses. Mr. Kaganovich was a Senior Associate at Sun Microsystems venture group, where he had responsibilities for deal sourcing, due diligence and deal negotiation. His investments included Entercept Security Technologies (sold to Network Associates), ProactiveNet (sold to BMC Software, NYSE: BMC), and Agea (sold to Avalon Digital Marketing Systems, NASDAQ: AVLN). In 1999 he became the first associate at Black Emerald Capital, a Wall Street merchant bank and M&A boutique. In 1992, while still in college he founded a total solution VAR, which he grew for five years and sold before returning to graduate school. Mr. Kaganovich has spent time performing as a professional jazz saxophonist. He serves on the board of SARTA, and as Observer for Tioga Energy and Intematix. He received his MBA from Columbia Business School and a BS in International Business from Aquinas College.  


Tarun Kalra
Investment Professional, Battery Ventures

Tarun focuses on investments in enterprise applications, on demand services, security software and mobile. Prior to joining Battery, Tarun was a member of Deutsche Bank’s Technology Investment Banking Group where he worked on equity and debt financings and strategic advisory assignments for leading technology and software clients, including: Hewlett-Packard, Cadence Design Systems, Concur Technologies, Taleo Corporation and SuccessFactors. Before Deutsche Bank, Tarun worked at Citigroup Investment Research, initially focusing on Internet and new media and subsequently covering security and infrastructure software.

Tarun is a graduate of Middlebury College with a dual degree in political science and economics with a minor in mathematics.


Darrell Kong

Darrell Kong
Director of Venture Capital Services, Fenwick and West

Darrell focuses on strengthening Fenwick's relationships with both venture capital investors and the entrepreneur community. He has worked with emerging technology companies since 1998 in a variety of roles. Prior to joining Fenwick and West, he managed Gray Cary's Venture Pipeline group. His investment experience includes positions with Claremont Creek Ventures, Ex'tent (a private Dutch investment fund) and Sylvan Ventures where he worked on capital deployments totaling more than $40M into early stage companies. In addition to his investment experience Darrell launched myBschool.com, an on-line affinity marketing company targeting professional school students, while completing his graduate studies.

Darrell graduated from UCLA with a BA in Economics and holds an MBA from Columbia Business School.


Amir Lahat
Head of Business Ventures , Nokia Siemens Networks

Amir Lahat is Head of Business Ventures for Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN). In this role Amir leads new business initiatives focusing beyond the current scope of NSN operations, as well as driving world-wide partnerships with the venture industry, VCs and startups. Amir joined NSN through the Atrica’s acquisition, the Carrier-Ethernet company he co-founded. Amir's operational background spans over telecom and datacom industries where he had business development, solution and strategy, product marketing, product management and engineering roles. Prior to Atrica he was with 3Com/NiceCom and Nortel/Telrad. Amir brings to NSN over 18 years of startup entrepreneurship, venture community network both in the silicon-valley Israel and Asia, and global communication corporations experience.

Amir holds 10 patents and another 4 pending approval patents in the areas of network & system architecture, applications, protocols, optical and data networking.

Amir owns MBA and engineering degrees from Tel-Aviv University, and continued studies from Stanford. Amir is based in the Silicon Valley, California.


Allan Leinwand Allan Leinwand
Venture Partner, Panorama Capital

Mr. Leinwand is a venture partner at Panorama Capital and focuses on technology investments. Prior to this role, he joined JPMorgan Partners as an operating partner in 2004. From 2001 to 2004, he was President and Co-founder of Proficient Networks, Inc. From 2000 to 2001, he was Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Engineering at Telegis Networks, Inc. In 1997 Mr. Leinwand joined Digital Island, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISLD) at inception and served as their Vice President of Engineering and Chief Technology Officer through the company's IPO and secondary offering. From 1990 to 1997, Mr. Leinwand served as Manager of Consulting Engineering and Senior Software Engineer at Cisco Systems, Inc. helping to build and engineer service provider and enterprise networks worldwide. He co-authored "Cisco Router Configuration" and "Network Management: A Practical Perspective" and has been granted a patent in the field of data routing. He currently is an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Berkeley where he teaches the subjects of computer networks, network management, and network design. Mr. Leinwand holds a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He presently serves on the board of directors of Vyatta, Inc. He is also a board observer to Belair Networks, Cedar Point Communications and Sylantro Systems


Peter Loukianoff Peter Loukianoff
Partner, Almaz Capital

Prior to co-founding Almaz Capital, Peter was a partner at Alloy Ventures from 2001-2008. Before his career in venture capital, Peter co-founded an enterprise software company and was an operating executive with two other successful Internet and mobility start-ups in Silicon Valley. From 1989 through 1994, he worked in Russia with prominent scientific institutions, including the Kurchatov Institute, Troitsk Triniti Research Center, and the Russian Academy of Sciences, to facilitate licensing arrangements with US companies, including Apple, Sun Microsystems, and General Atomics, among others. In 1991, Peter was the first to organize a Perestroika-era Russian-American symposium on technology transfer and commercialization. He is on the board of directors of Attune Systems, Apptera and Ravenflow, and is a co-inventor on five patent-pending voice advertising and mobile messaging technologies. Peter earned an MBA and BS Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.


 

Deborah Magid
Director, Software Strategy, IBM Venture Capital Group

Deborah Magid represents IBM’s $22B software business in the company’s 9-year old Venture Capital Group.  Her expertise spans several industries.

Deborah is responsible for building ecosystems for IBM by sharing insights about emerging markets, technologies, and business models with venture firms and entrepreneurs around the world.   She also brings insight form the venture community to the development of IBM’s growth strategies.  She scouts for emerging business opportunities, and shares views on innovation and growth areas of the market.   Deborah’s relationships are global, and extend into emerging geographies.  Deborah is a frequent spokesperson on topics of relevance to entrepreneurs and investors, and is on the board of SDForum, the Silicon Valley emerging technology network.

Previously, Deborah held positions in product management, marketing, and user-centered design at Taligent, GE Information Services and AT&T.  Deborah holds degrees in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Connecticut.
 


Mark Mangiola
Venture Partner, Canaan Partners

Mark Mangiola joined Canaan in 2001 after over 20 years in operational leadership roles in the cable and broadband industry. Mark invests in communications companies that are transforming the delivery of digital media, as well as new consumer content companies that meld entertainment with interactivity. Mark has a visionary outlook about how consumers will watch and interact with content in the future, having participated first hand in the early emergence of both cable TV and the Internet. He also supports key clean tech opportunities. Mark actively participated in Canaan’s investment in Ellacoya, a rapidly-growing broadband service optimization company, and Zolo Technologies, a clean tech pioneer that is dramatically reducing emissions from power plants.

A super-connected industry veteran, Mark leverages his network to fill key executive positions at Canaan’s portfolio firms and helps them spearhead strategic relationships with industry-leading corporations. Prior to Canaan, Mark served as CEO of @Home Solutions, a division of Excite@Home. He was previously the President and CEO of Positive Communications and an Executive VP at KBLCOM/Time Warner. He sits on the board of Zolo Technologies.

When Mark is not thinking about how consumer-generated video will change the world, he is sprinting around a track. A passionate athlete, Mark coaches high-school and college track athletes and never misses a Meet of Champions track meet.


 

Tom Marchok
Director, Strategic Investments,
Intel Capital

Tom Marchok is a Director of Strategic Investments in Intel Capital, which is Intel's corporate business development and venture capital arm. Tom is responsible for strategic investment and business development activity on behalf of Intel's Corporate Technology Group (i.e., central R&D labs). His activities focus on emerging technologies that will impact Intel's future microprocessor and communications platforms. His responsibilities include developing investment strategies, executing strategic investment and business/licensing deals, and company building. Tom has been with Intel for 14 years, and Intel Capital for eight years. He represents Intel as an observer to the Board of Directors for four companies. Tom is part of a team that recently received of an Intel Achievement Award – Intel’s highest honor - for developing ultra-wideband technology, the associated standards, favorable worldwide regulatory environment, and establishing an aligned external ecosystem of suppliers. Tom previously worked in microprocessor development teams, and holds 1 US patent. Tom holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Electrical & Computer Engineering, all from Carnegie Mellon University, and has completed the Executive Program at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.

Alexander K. Marquez

Alexander Marquez
Director , Strategic Investments, Intel Capital

Alexander joined Intel Capital in 2000. Prior to Intel Capital, Alexander served as technical advisor to the senior vice president of Intel's Interactive Media Services division where he advised on strategy and media investments. Alexander also served as controller for Intel's Content Services division where he oversaw financial aspects of the division, including numerous investments in Europe, Japan, Asia, and Latin America. Alexander has managed successful investments around the globe including exits at Atom Entertainment (acquired by Viacom) and The Generations Network (acquired by Spectrum Equity). Alexander is a board observer for BlackArrow, Envivio, K2 Network, SixApart and Synacor. Alexander holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he was also the past Chairman of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Advisory Board and currently serves on the College of Engineering Advisory Board. He received his Masters in Business Administration from Purdue University.


 

Vivek Mehra
Partner August Capital

Vivek joined August Capital in 2003. He invests broadly in IT infrastructure and areas of interest include data center technologies, systems management, security, storage, and cloud computing systems and software.

Prior to joining August Capital, Vivek co-founded Cobalt Networks in 1996. As CTO & VP of Product Development, Vivek built the first successful server appliance and grew Cobalt into a worldwide leader in the category, culminating in a successful IPO and acquisition by Sun Microsystems for $2B. At Sun, Vivek served as the Vice President and General Manager of the Cobalt Business Unit and a member of Sun’s Technical Architecture Counsel.

Prior to founding Cobalt, Vivek held a number of technical and management positions at Apple, SGI, and Digital Equipment Corporation and successfully developed numerous products including Internet enabled set-top boxes, PDAs, RISC workstations, and high performance graphics subsystems.

Vivek received a BS in Electronics from Punjab University, India, and an MS in Computer Engineering from Iowa State University.

Current Investments and Board Affiliations: DotNetNuke, PacketTrap Networks, and Virsto Software.

Tae Hea Nahm is a founding general partner of Storm Ventures.  Previously, he was a founding partner of Venture Law Group and a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where he advised and personally invested in numerous startups.  At Storm, he was the founding investor and CEO of AireSpace and hired the first 24 employees (the company was later acquired by Cisco for $450m).  He holds an AB in Applied Mathematics from Harvard College and a JD from University of Chicago Law School. Oleg Nodelman is a Portfolio Manager and Partner of the Biotechnology Value Fund, a biotech focused investment fund in San Francisco where he is responsible for evaluating investment opportunities, in-depth scientific due diligence and working with company management on formulating business and financial strategies. BVF was founded in 1993 and is focused on both public and private therapeutic discovery and development ventures. Mr. Nodelman has served on the Boards of several seed stage start-ups. Before joining BVF, Mr. Nodelman was a consultant with Mercer Management Consulting: a strategy firm. John Nogrady

John Nogrady is Director of Business Development for Microsoft’s Emerging Business Team. His team is responsible for fostering global partnerships between Microsoft, the venture investing community and startup companies. They focus on identifying areas of synergy with startup companies and working with them to develop and market offerings that complement the Microsoft platform and ecosystem.

John has over 20 years of experience in the technology sector. John started his career at Digital Equipment Corporation, as a software engineer working on VMS operating system.

Throughout his career, John has been involved in founding and building several startups. His positions have included Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Engineering at PrizePoint Entertainment, which was acquired by Uproar in 1999. John was Director of Engineering at PointCast, where he was responsible for building out the data center and distribution servers for the PointCast network including the management of the Development and Information System teams. Prior to that, he held the position of Senior Software Architect at BluePoint Technologies, which was acquired by Adobe Systems, where John held the position of Manager of Pacific Rim Display Products. Just before joining Microsoft in 2003, John was director of business technology at WebMethods, where his responsibilities included the technical relationship management of SAP AG.

John serves as an advisory to several early stage technology companies and is an active advisory board member for the University of California Davis Office of Research.

Peter Redford

Peter Redford, Managing Partner, Goddess Ventures LLC:  Mr. Redford has been a pioneer in the Silicon Valley technology industry for the last 30 years, starting as a researcher with the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). Since 1981, he has served continuously as CEO of investor funded Silicon Valley technology companies.  He sold his first company to Yamaha in 1982.  

Redford is an expert company builder, negotiator, and marketing strategist and has broad experience in product development, OEM and mass-market consumer sales, international business development (Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand and Ireland), and intellectual property licensing and protection.

Marc Sokol

Mr. Sokol has more than 30 years of experience in the information technology industry. He has been an active venture capital investor for 9 years with JK&B Capital. Prior to joining JK&B, Mr. Sokol held a number of senior management and technical positions at Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA). These include Senior Vice President and General Manager of Global Marketing, Senior Vice President of Business Development and Senior Vice President of Advanced Technology. Don Wood

Prior to MDV, George led the Nintendo 64 development business at Silicon Graphics, managed sales and marketing for virtual reality pioneer VPL Research, and served as a product marketeer at CATS Software. He is a board advisor at the MIT Sloan School of Business and Stanford BASES. He is also an advisor to X PRIZE. George earned a joint BS from MIT and MIT Sloan School of Business.


 

Leon Zilber
Associate, Valhalla Partners

Leon is an associate with Valhalla Partners, a Washington, DC-based venture capital firm that focuses on investments in technology companies. Leon brings ten years of operational and technical experience to the firm. Prior to Valhalla Partners, Leon held senior operational roles at Alliance Bernstein Asset Management (NYC) and PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting (NYC). Before joining PwC, Leon was a product manager with HP R&D Labs in Florham Park, NJ.

Leon has a BS and MS in Computer Science from Rutgers University and resides in Washington, DC

Dr. Evgeny Zaytsev co-founded Helix Ventures, a Life Sciences venture capital firm in 2008, and brings nine years of venture capital and nine years of operations and research experience to the firm. Since 2001 Evgeny has managed the life sciences portfolio in two venture capital partnerships at Asset Management Company, one of the oldest venture capital firms in Silicon Valley. Evgeny focuses on early stage investments in biotechnology and medical device companies. He is a Board Member of a number of private life sciences companies in Silicon Valley.

Evgeny is an active business community leader. He is a founder of the US-Russia Technology Symposium at Stanford University and the annual Silicon Valley Open Doors technology investment conference. Evgeny is a past president of the American Business Association of Russian Professionals (AmBAR).

He received his M.D. (cum laude) in 1991 and his Ph.D. in physiology in 1993, both from the Altai State Medical University. He earned his M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2002.


Scott C. Johnston
Venture Partner, Alloy Ventures

Anna Dvornikova: Scott C. Johnston joined Alloy Ventures as an EIR in 2008. He brings with him 16 years of operating experience, during which his functional responsibilities have ranged from software engineering and IT operations to product management, business development, and sales. He spent his first 12 years in the enterprise infrastructure industry at Sun Microsystems, Netscape, Cisco, and Loudcloud. More recently, he's served in leadership roles in early stage consumer Internet advertising and marketing start-ups, including Connexus and Adchemy.

In a prior life he worked for Booz-Allen & Hamilton and as a researcher for MITI in Japan. He presently serves as a volunteer for the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a non-profit organization which delivers entrepreneurship education programs to youth in low-income communities. Scott attended Stanford University and earned BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering, an MS in Manufacturing Systems Engineering, and an MBA.

His areas of focus at Alloy include IT infrastructure and Internet applications and services for both consumers and enterprises.

Tim Connors
General Partner, US Venture Partners

Tim Connors joined USVP in June 2001. He focuses on business and consumer internet services companies. Prior to USVP, Tim was a Partner at Sequoia Capital. Tim's operating experience spans seven years in engineering, marketing, manufacturing and sales roles at successful high-growth start-ups like C-Cube Microsystems and large companies like Tandem Computers.

Tim is currently a Director of 4info.net, Blekko.com, Guidewire Software, Media6Degrees.com, M-Factor.com, and Right90.com. Tim conceived of and co-founded Spoke.com. Previously, Tim was a Director of Adify (acquired by Cox Enterprises), ClickShift.com (acquired by WebTrends), Redline Communications (LSE: REDL), StorePerform (acquired by Red Prairie), and SupplierMarket.com (acquired by Ariba). Tim serves on the Board of Advisors of the Gigot Center for Entrepreneurship at Notre Dame.

Tim received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and an M.B.A from Harvard Business School.

 

Stan Chudnovsky
Angel Investor, Co-Founder, Ooga Labs

Stan Chudnovsky is Co-Founder and CTO of Ooga Labs, a venture lab in San Francisco, developing multiple Internet businesses (WonderHill.com, MedPedia.com and others) simultaneously. Prior to Ooga, Stan spent 6-plus years building Tickle Inc., growing it to $40 million in revenues and selling to Monster for over $100 million. In charge of Engineering, Stan also gained responsibilities over Product and Operations and was named CEO after Tickle's founder and CEO, James Currier, departed in 2005. Prior to Tickle, Stan was VP of Engineering at SayIt Inc. Before that, he managed and developed a number of pioneering applications for Fortune 500 companies.

Jeffery D. Black Mr. Jeffery Black has over 29 years of experience spanning the High-Tech, Bio-Tech and Venture Capital worlds. During his career, he has been a well known pioneer in innovation  from speaking at industry conferences to testifying in front of Congress to launching entirely new industries. At present, Mr. Black is the President of EXT (symbol: EXTI) which is the holding company for companies like NewsWire, Cancer.IM, Overtize, and [N]ext (which takes companies from startup to a public entity in 18 months. In addition to EXT, Mr. Black is the Managing Partner at both PartnerVision Capital (.PV Capital.) and PartnerVision Ventures (.PV Ventures.). Prior to forming PV Ventures, Mr. Black was involved with another technology incubator called Internet Marketing Inc. (.IMI.) where he successfully launched (in 1994) iAtlas Corporation (the first internet-based Yellow Pages, Maps and Driving Directions company). In addition, Mr. Black pioneered and patented the world’s first .filtered. search engine that fundamentally changed the way search engines work today. Lastly, in 1995 Mr. Black founded and launched the world’s first internet-based ..hotel. reservation booking engine (Hotels.com) and the first geo-spatial search engine for marketing to the hospitality industry (Resorts.com). Eventually, iAtlas was purchased by AltaVista in 1999 (later purchased by Yahoo), Resorts.com was purchased by Sun International in 2000 and Hotels.com was purchased in 2001 by the Hotel Reservation Network (later renamed to Hotels.com). Prior to IMI’s, Mr. Black spent 14 years working for Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) (1982-1996) where he was instrumental in launching many new technologies such as DEC’s MicroVax, RIP-less printers and firewall technologies. While at DEC, he was part of the AltaVista launch team (1995) that popularized the .enterprise search engine. which generated over $1 billion dollars in hardware, software and services revenues in less than 24 months. As a Vice President and General Manager at AltaVista, he grew his organization in 1999 from 5 people to over 160 people within the first year and attained profitability within his first two quarters of taking over. While working on classified project for various government agencies, Mr. Black held top-secret (TS/SCI) clearances. Mr. Black began his high-tech career in 1978 while working for Tandy Corporation where he was involved in launching the first retail computer store in the United States  the Radio Shack Computer Centers. Mr. Black holds numerous patents. He also serves on various company advisory boards. Mr. Black studied Computer Science and Business Management at Montgomery College. Mr. Black also has over 4,000 hours of specialty training at DEC’s Educational Services covering Management Consulting to Program Management to A.I. Programming.

Pavel Bogdanov
Ph.D., Partner, Almaz Capital Partners

Prior to joining Almaz Capital, Dr. Bogdanov was a partner at Russian Technologies (RT), an early-stage venture capital fund in Moscow. At RT, he managed ten of its portfolio companies and also led an investment into CIP, the leading Russian 3D cartography operator.

In 2005, he was recruited to Sistema Telecom. As Investment Director, Dr. Bogdanov arranged $2 billion of debt and equity financings for a number of Sistema's portfolio companies. He was a member of the IPO team for Comstar-UTS (LON: CMST) and participated in and led the acquisitions of several regional fixed-line operators. Dr. Bogdanov led Sistema's investment into Wavecrest, a wholesale telephony operator in the UK, and later negotiated the sale of Wavecrest to MTT. He participated in the investment committees of Comstar-UTS and MTS (NYSE: MBT), and also developed Sistema's WiMax strategy and its relationships with regulators outside of Russia, and participated in a telecommunications operator auction in Turkey.

In 2002, Dr. Bogdanov joined KLA-Tencor, the leading semiconductor yield management company, as a Systems Design Engineer in Silicon Valley. Prior to KLA, he worked as a graduate research associate and post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) at the University of California, Berkeley. His research was published in leading scientific journals, including Science, Nature, and Physical Review Letters. In 2003, he was part of the team that put together the first US-Russia Technology Symposium at Stanford, which brought together US and Russian venture capitalists and Russian technology companies.

Dr. Bogdanov earned a PhD from Stanford University, an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France; and a BS from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Moscow, Russia.
